HISTORY

Loyola College in Maryland was established by priests and brothers of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1852. It was the first Jesuit college in the U.S. to bear the name of St. Ignatius Loyola and ninth according to date-of-origin among today's Jesuit collegiate institutions in the country. The second oldest chartered college in Baltimore, Loyola merged in 1971 with Mount St. Agnes College, an undergraduate institution operated by the Sisters of Mercy, and has been fully coeducational in all programs since. It is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Sellinger School of Business and Management, and offers undergraduate, graduate and professional development programs. The College is governed by a 28-member Board of Trustees.

ENROLLMENT

Loyola enrolls 3,307 full time undergraduates and 2,886 graduate students. Undergraduate and graduate students combined represent 45 states and 25 foreign countries. The full-time undergraduate population is 55 percent female and 45 percent male,and 77 percent of the undergraduates reside on campus.

ATHLETICS

Loyola competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference of the NCAA Division I, fielding teams in eight men's and eight women's sports. Athletic facilities include the 3,000-seat Reitz Arena, the 3,000-seat John M. Curley, Jr., Field, and the Fitness and Aquatic Center, where the Swimming and Diving Teams compete before a 500-seat spectator area.

The construction of a new Intercollegiate Athletic Complex promises to strengthen Loyola's ascent in intercollegiate athletics. The complex, located near Cold Spring Lane and I-83, will include a four-level, 6,000-square foot grandstand overlooking a natural grass field with a synthetic base, allowing for maximum durability and flexibility for a variety of athletic activities. The complex also will house a two practice fields and a NCAA-regulation running track. An historic, $80 million Capital Campaign is currently underway at the College, $20 million of which will support the construction of the new Intercollegiate Athletic Complex.

ALUMNI

As of 2006, there are nearly 50,000 living alumni of Loyola College in Maryland, including 2,187 alumnae of the former Mount St. Agnes College, which joined with Loyola in 1971. Fifty-nine percent of Loyola's alumni reside in the State of Maryland, while 41 percent reside outside Maryland, with the largest concentrations residing in the northeastern United States as well as California and Virginia.
