Computer Science and Software Engineering

The ceaseless evolution of information technology, and society's dependence on increasingly sophisticated computer systems and software, demands computer professionals who have the knowledge to succeed in this fiercely competitive and rapidly changing environment.

Loyola offers two graduate programs in Computer Science, and Software Engineering--programs that teach you how to adapt to change, welcome it, thrive on it, and ultimately turn it into a force that changes your career.

The key to embracing change is thorough training in computing fundamentals.  In operating systems it's managing processes, memory, I/O, disks, files, and concurrency; in progamming languages it's procedural, declarative object-oriented, and functional languages and how they are implemented; in object-oriented languages it's abstraction, encapsulation, modularity, and hierarchy; in data structures it's stacks, queues, lists, trees, hash tables, graphs, and efficient ways to implement them; in algorithms it's not just sorting and searching, but ways to compare algorithms using Big-O techniques; in databases it's integrity, consistency, recoverability, security, and efficient database design; and in computing theory it's learning that not everything can be computed, even if you can describe the computation.

Technologies change, but their underlying fundamentals do not.  By mastering the fundamentals, you gain the ability to keep pace with ever-changing technologies and the flexibility to change along with them.

Whether you're looking to retool your skills, gain new ones, or begin or recharge your career, translating academic excellence into a long and successful career is what Loyola College's graduate programs are all about.
