School Counseling

Setting Standards of Excellence in School Counseling...

The first graduate program in school counseling in Maryland approved by both the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), the M.Ed. provides automatic state certification upon successful completion of the program. CACREP designation ensures that students have met all national requirements for taking the NCE examination of the National Board for the Certification of Counselors (NBCC) and sets professional standards for school counselors at the highest level.

Building on a sound theoretical foundation, the M.Ed. in School Counseling helps students develop effective techniques for guiding young people in grades K through 12. The program core focuses on professional issues and ethics, theories of human development, and strategies of counseling, while also examining such areas as lifestyle and career development and cross-cultural and group counseling. This well-rounded course of study is complemented by a rigorous practical experience comprising 700 total hours of practicum and internship. The combination of CACREP-approved courses and intense clinical service provides the breadth of experience that distinguishes Loyola graduates from their peers and provides outstanding preparation for careers in counseling.

Programs:

"What I love about Loyola is that it truly lives up to the Jesuit tradition of Cura Personalis (Care of the Person). As the only non-counselor in a class of school counselors, I was most impressed by the genuine level of commitment and seriousness the graduate students expressed in wanting to help children. I would hire any one of them to work in my school."
